Chapter 10

A trickle of blood dripped from Brad’s nose to his upper lip. Brooke stared as he pulled out a handkerchief from his pocket and wiped at his nose as if he did this sort of thing all the time.

Brad Jaylon was not a wellloved man. Actually, no one in Winterberry Falls liked him. Maybe if he’d stop acting like he was the best thing that ever happened to this town, people would be nice. But he had screwed over so many townsfolk that his reputation was shot. At least when his dad was alive, there had been a little honor in the Jaylon Corporation. Not any more.

He stared hard at Travis, then took a few steps back. “That was uncalled for, Travis. I didn’t do anything to you.”

“You tried to screw over my family, like you tried with many people here. Except my brother was too smart for your treachery. You might have his girl, but you didn’t get the farm or the land. You have no business on this property. Take off before I throw another punch your way.”

He wiped his nose again. “I could sue you.”

“For what? Getting what you deserve?”

“I admit I did steal his girl and was probably wrong to do that. She doesn’t love me anyway. Actually, she doesn’t love anyone but herself.”

Brooke didn’t want to mention Zach was much better off without a woman like that. She remembered how Zach and Jennifer were talking about marriage when Brad swooped in with his fancy cars and lifestyle and she dumped Zach for him. It had been right after Brad’s father died and he took over the corporation.

“Zach didn’t deserve that. You two were supposed to be friends. Friends don’t take another man’s girl.”

Brad shrugged, then wiped at his nose again. “Maybe I’ll gift her to him. I hear rumors that she wants to divorce me.” He laughed.

Brooke took hold of Travis’s hand right as he was ready to pounce on Brad again. The man was always trying to stir up trouble and it always worked. Brad didn’t know how to keep his mouth shut. No matter how rich he was, he’d rather show off and make a person feel inferior. He had the mentality that his money could buy his way through anything.

“Pops wouldn’t want you on this property, Brad. You go on and get out of here.” Brooke wasn’t going to let Travis loose from the death grip she had on his arm.

Brad didn’t miss that. “I’ll give this to you, so you can give it to Sam and Pepper. It’s a proposal for the lodge.” He held it out to her, but when she stood her ground, refusing to reach out and take the offer, he let the paper fall from his hands. It landed on Travis’s boot.

“Go,” she warned him.

“Or what? You’ll let your boyfriend loose on me?” He shook his head and held up his hands in front of himself. “I’m leaving, don’t worry.”

“Don’t say a word,” she warned Travis. “Let him leave.
